Grande Prairie Surgeries Postponed Over Sterilization Woes
29 Apr
Summary
- Some elective surgeries in Grande Prairie are postponed due to sterilization concerns.
- Emergency surgeries, including C-sections, remain unaffected.
- Instruments will be sent to Edmonton for cleaning until the issue is fixed.
Elective surgeries at the Grande Prairie Regional Hospital have been postponed due to a medical device reprocessing issue impacting surgical tool sterilization. Alberta Health Services announced the decision on Monday, emphasizing that emergency surgeries, such as C-sections, cancer-related, and trauma procedures, will continue without interruption.
This measure is a precaution to ensure public safety and maintain the hospital's capacity for urgent procedures. Until the hospital's surgical instrument sterilization process is fully restored and verified as safe, instruments will be cleaned in Edmonton. AHS anticipates that elective surgeries will resume early this week and is actively working to reschedule postponed procedures promptly.
