Multiple visitors to the Grand Canyon have fallen ill with a baffling mystery sickness, prompting an investigation by the National Park Service.
Individuals who recently rafted the Colorado River have reported experiencing severe flu-like symptoms, infections, and other concerning health issues. One rafter described his symptoms as "horrible," feeling like he had completed a hard workout daily despite minimal activity. He also experienced a knee infection diagnosed as cellulitis, pneumonia, and mosquito bites.
Another group of rafters reported that four out of sixteen travelers experienced symptoms including fever, chills, weakness, and fluid in the lungs. Doctors suggested pneumonia for some and infection for another, but the overall cause remains elusive. The National Park Service confirmed it is aware of the reports and is leading an investigation with public health partners, promising to share updates as they become available.
