Better Sleep Offsets Cardiometabolic Disease Brain Risks
7 Nov
Summary
- Good sleep may lessen the negative brain effects of type 2 diabetes, heart disease.
- Well-rested individuals with cardiometabolic issues show better cognitive function.
- Healthy sleep can help mitigate brain atrophy in those with heart conditions.
Good sleep quality may help counteract the detrimental impacts of cardiometabolic diseases on brain health, a recent study indicates.
The research, which analyzed data from over 400,000 individuals in the UK Biobank, found that people with type 2 diabetes, heart disease, or stroke who reported healthy sleep patterns demonstrated superior cognitive abilities and larger brain volumes.
These findings suggest that addressing sleep quality can be a key strategy for maintaining cognitive function and brain structure, particularly for those at risk or living with cardiometabolic conditions. Sleep was assessed via duration, circadian rhythm, insomnia, snoring, and sleepiness.
