30 Sep
Summary
- New drug retatrutide targets three appetite hormones, unlike Ozempic and Mounjaro.
- Hypotension and abnormal skin sensations were noted as new side effects in trials.
- Illegal online versions of the drug have been found mixed with rat poison.

A new experimental weight loss drug, codenamed 'Godzilla,' is showing remarkable potential by targeting three key hormones involved in appetite and metabolism. Early trials suggest results comparable to weight-loss surgery, surpassing existing treatments like Ozempic and Mounjaro. However, final-stage trials have revealed two significant, previously unconfirmed side effects: hypotension (low blood pressure) and dysesthesia (abnormal skin sensations), occurring in a notable percentage of users on higher doses.
The TRIUMPH-2 trial, involving over 2,000 participants with type 2 diabetes and obesity, demonstrated substantial weight loss, with some patients losing over 20% of their body weight. While diarrhea and nausea were the most common side effects, seven deaths occurred across the trial groups, though deemed unrelated to the drug. Researchers believe retatrutide could significantly advance obesity and type 2 diabetes treatment, but further studies are needed.
Meanwhile, health authorities are issuing urgent warnings against purchasing retatrutide from unregulated online sources. Counterfeit versions, some sold for as little as £2, have been found to be dangerously adulterated with substances like rat poison and cement. Seizures of illegal weight-loss pens in the UK highlight the serious risks associated with these black-market products, which have already caused seizures and liver damage in some users.
