Contaminated Glutathione Injections Spark Health Alerts

Federal health officials have issued warnings concerning dozens of illnesses, including hospitalizations, potentially linked to contaminated injectable glutathione. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) alerted the public about unsterile versions of the peptide, which are compounded at pharmacies across the U.S. These products are often marketed for energy, anti-aging, and liver detoxification.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported illnesses in at least four states: Texas, Washington, Florida, and New York. These cases followed intravenous or injected glutathione, which were associated with elevated bacteria levels. Consumers experienced symptoms such as fever, chills, muscle pain, dizziness, and sepsis-like symptoms.

One compounding pharmacy, Victory Medical Center Pharmacy in Texas, voluntarily recalled its compounded glutathione in August after reports of severe adverse events. The FDA had previously urged compounding pharmacies to discontinue using certain lots of IV glutathione obtained from Medisca, a New York-based company, due to unsterile conditions.

While the body naturally produces glutathione, injectable forms have gained popularity at medical spas, despite concerns about the regulatory scrutiny of peptides. Experts emphasize that non-sterile products injected into the body can lead to serious trouble, highlighting the critical need for sterility in IV products. The safety of oral glutathione dietary supplements remains distinct from these concerns regarding injectable compounds.
