GLP-1s Kidney Benefit Limited: Study Reveals Caveats
26 Sep
Summary
- GLP-1s show limited evidence for kidney health in patients without albuminuria.
- A study found benefits for patients with albuminuria, showing stalled kidney decline.
- CKD affects nearly 900 million people globally and is a leading cause of death.

Recent findings suggest that the use of GLP-1 medications, also known as weight-loss drugs, for managing kidney issues may be limited. While previously shown to slow chronic kidney disease (CKD) progression in diabetics, new research indicates little evidence of benefit for patients who do not have albuminuria. Albuminuria is characterized by elevated protein levels in the urine.
A study analyzing data from approximately 75,000 people over 32 months found that GLP-1s appeared to halt kidney decline in patients with albuminuria. This condition is one of the factors contributing to CKD, a major global health concern.
This research emerges as CKD continues to affect nearly 900 million individuals worldwide, posing a significant threat and ranking as the ninth-leading cause of death globally. Many cases of kidney disease may go undiagnosed until advanced stages.
