GLP-1 Drugs Show Promise in Slowing Cancer Spread
22 May
Summary
- GLP-1 drugs may reduce cancer progression in obesity-related cancers.
- Study found significant reduction in cancer spread for lung and breast cancer.
- Observational study suggests further research into GLP-1s and cancer is warranted.

Initially developed to manage type 2 diabetes, GLP-1 drugs like Ozempic and Wegovy are now being studied for their potential to slow cancer progression. A recent observational study, comparing patients on GLP-1 drugs with those taking DPP-4 inhibitors, revealed a significant association with reduced cancer spread.
The research analyzed over 12,000 patients across seven types of early-stage cancers. Results indicated that GLP-1 drug users experienced lower rates of metastatic progression in six of the seven cancers studied. Notably, lung cancer patients showed a 50 percent reduced likelihood of progressing to stage four, and breast cancer patients a 43 percent reduction.
Statistically significant reductions in cancer spread were observed in lung, breast, colorectal, and liver cancers. However, patients with kidney cancer taking GLP-1 drugs did not show a similar decrease in spread. The study authors emphasize that while these findings provide compelling early evidence, they cannot establish direct causation due to the observational design.
This research emerges as GLP-1 medications gain widespread popularity, with a significant portion of the adult population in the U.S. reporting current or past use for various chronic conditions. The findings underscore the need for future studies to explore these potential anti-cancer effects more deeply.
