Global Activity Levels Stagnant: Inequality Worsens
12 May
Summary
- Global physical activity levels remain unchanged despite policy efforts.
- Millions die annually due to physical inactivity worldwide.
- Wealthy men engage more in leisure activity than disadvantaged women.

Global physical activity levels have remained stagnant over the last two decades, despite numerous policy recommendations and widespread adoption. Three new research reports reveal persistent inequalities across gender and socioeconomic lines, with current efforts proving insufficient to increase participation. Worldwide, over five million deaths each year are linked to physical inactivity.
Analysis of data from 68 countries shows that higher income levels correlate with increased physical activity through leisure. Conversely, lower-income countries see a greater proportion of activity derived from labor and transport. Wealthy men in developed nations have a 40 percentage point greater opportunity for active leisure compared to socio-economically disadvantaged women in poorer countries.
Furthermore, national policy documents indicate a lack of implementation and cross-sectoral collaboration. Many countries lack measurable targets to assess policy impact, challenging the assumption that policy adoption automatically leads to change. These findings emphasize the need for systemic changes rather than individual blame to boost global physical activity.
