Global Alliance to Fight Deadly Diabetic Foot

Institutions worldwide are being invited to form a Global Alliance for Diabetic Foot Survival and Limb Preservation. The Diabetic Foot Society of India (DFSI) has initiated this proposal, aiming to create a unified platform for addressing the severe consequences of diabetic foot ulceration, including premature death and limb loss.

This critical health issue, comparable to some cancers in its five-year mortality rate, currently receives insufficient global investment and policy attention. The proposed alliance seeks to rectify this by establishing sustained scientific and policy efforts for prevention, limb preservation, enhanced survival, and rehabilitation.

DFSI plans to announce its intention to form the alliance at its national conference on October 2, 2026. The alliance's objectives include advocating with the WHO and national governments for greater recognition of diabetic foot disease, improving patient outcomes through multidisciplinary care, and promoting research and training.

A draft Global Declaration accompanies the proposal, calling for urgent action, including reduced mortality and amputation rates by 2030. It urges the WHO and member states to integrate diabetic foot prevention into diabetes policies and support dedicated programs.
