Gilead's New HIV Pill Shows Promise for Patients
26 Feb
Summary
- Experimental single-tablet HIV treatment generally well tolerated.
- Low discontinuation rates observed in late-stage trials.
- Patients reported higher treatment satisfaction after switching.

Gilead Sciences has reported that its experimental single-tablet HIV treatment demonstrated good tolerability and low discontinuation rates among patients. This development positions the single-tablet regimen as a potential future option for individuals whose HIV virus is already suppressed.
Late-stage trial results, presented recently, indicated that discontinuation due to adverse events was minimal. In one trial, only 1.6% and 0.5% of participants in the respective treatment arms discontinued the therapy for this reason, figures considered low.
The experimental combination pill was studied in HIV patients who were switching from multi-tablet regimens or other single-tablet treatments. After 48 weeks, a small percentage of patients on the combination pill had detectable virus, compared to those on multi-tablet regimens.
Additionally, participants reported increased treatment satisfaction after switching to Gilead's experimental regimen, as noted in a published paper. The company intends to submit data from these trials to regulatory bodies for approval, though the combination has not yet been approved by any authority.
