GI Cancers Rise: Experts Urge Early Detection
20 Sep
Summary
- Gastrointestinal cancer cases have significantly increased over the past decade.
- Lifestyle and dietary habits are major contributors to the rise in GI cancers.
- Early detection and minimally invasive surgeries improve patient outcomes.
An annual conference hosted in Ahmedabad by the Gastrointestinal Oncology Society focused on "Bridging Practice to Evidence in GI Malignancies." Discussions covered advancements in robotic surgery, hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy, radiation oncology, precision medicine, and integrated multidisciplinary care. The society's secretary noted a substantial increase across various gastrointestinal cancers, including esophageal and rectal cancers, over the past decade, attributing this trend largely to lifestyle and dietary factors.
Specialists emphasized that digestive tract malignancies constitute approximately 15-20% of all cancer diagnoses. Oesophageal, colorectal, and gallbladder cancers are among the most frequently reported. A significant challenge remains, as over half of patients still present with Stage III or IV disease, underscoring the critical need for early detection and intervention strategies. Advances in minimally invasive surgical techniques are helping to reduce the extent of tissue removed during treatment.
