Georgian Bay Hospital Halts Maternity Care
23 Sep
Summary
- Hospital closed obstetrical services due to staffing challenges.
- Closure affects pregnancy, childbirth, and post-birth care.
- Patients are being redirected to nearby hospitals.
Georgian Bay General Hospital (GBGH) has temporarily suspended its obstetrical services, which encompass pregnancy, childbirth, and post-birth care. This significant disruption is attributed to ongoing "human resources challenges" within the hospital. The closure commenced on Monday and is slated to remain in effect until 7 a.m. on Sunday.
During this period, expectant mothers are being redirected to other healthcare facilities. These include Orillia Soldiers Memorial Hospital, Collingwood General and Marine Hospital, Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre, and Stevenson Memorial Hospital. Midwifery clients are instructed to contact their midwifery teams as usual, with homebirth and community assessments remaining available through their providers.
In urgent situations, individuals experiencing pregnancy-related emergencies who arrive at GBGH's Emergency Department will receive an assessment to determine the appropriate course of care. The hospital advises residents with questions to consult their family physician or midwifery provider.
