Since Georgia lawmakers expanded the state's medical marijuana program in July, enrollment has surged dramatically. The Georgia Access to Medical Cannabis Commission reported a significant jump in registered patients.

The state's Low THC Oil Registry saw patient numbers climb from 36,703 to 46,197 in less than two months after the law took effect.

The revised legislation now permits registered patients to purchase products with higher THC concentrations. Additionally, the law includes new product types, such as dry herb and products intended for vaporization.

Dr. Tiffanni Forbes of Better Health Wellness noted that inhaled products can offer faster relief compared to other methods, which may take 30 to 90 minutes to achieve full effect. She emphasized that while pulmonary sources are effective for immediate relief, they should not be the sole method of cannabis use.

Eligibility for the program has also broadened, now including patients with conditions such as lupus, irritable bowel syndrome, and HIV. Previously, the most common qualifying conditions included post-traumatic stress disorder, cancer, and seizure disorders. Dr. Forbes mentioned that many patients seek treatment for chronic or intractable pain associated with conditions like rheumatoid arthritis, osteoporosis, chronic back problems, and degenerative diseases.

Due to increased demand and processing times, the commission estimates a four-week wait for medical marijuana cards.
