Eight-month-old Tripp Coker of Millen, Georgia, has traveled to Boston for a crucial procedure to address a serious heart condition.
Tripp is scheduled to undergo surgery at Boston Children's Hospital to repair or replace his mitral valve, which regulates blood flow between the heart's left chambers. Initially diagnosed with a heart murmur shortly after birth, his condition worsened, leading to heart failure and a previous open-heart surgery at eight weeks old.
The family chose Boston for this advanced treatment as local options were limited by the availability of a sufficiently small valve. His mother, Samantha, secured the vital medical care with assistance from insurance and a significant contribution from an anonymous donor.
Tripp and Samantha flew to Boston on Tuesday via AeroAngel, a nonprofit that provides air transportation for ill children. The flight was made possible by a generous anonymous donation. Friends, family, and the mayor of Millen saw them off, offering prayers for a successful surgery scheduled for April 13, with a pre-appointment on April 10.
They anticipate a month-long stay in Boston for Tripp's recovery. Samantha has also established a GoFundMe to help manage expenses, as she has been unable to work since July to care for Tripp. The community has rallied around the family, showing immense support for the infant's health journey.
