Botulism Alert: Recalled Tuna Back on Shelves!
20 Jan
Summary
- Recalled canned tuna, previously quarantined, was mistakenly shipped to retailers.
- Defective pull tabs on cans pose a risk of leakage and fatal botulism contamination.
- Consumers are warned not to consume the tuna and to seek immediate medical help if ill.

Consumers purchasing Genova brand canned tuna are urged to exercise caution due to an FDA recall warning. A shipment of tuna, previously quarantined last year due to a defective easy-open pull tab, was inadvertently distributed to retailers. This defect carries the risk of can leakage and contamination with clostridium botulinum, a potentially fatal food poisoning agent.
The recalled products include Genova Yellowfin Tuna in Olive Oil 5.0 oz 4 Pack (UPC 4800073265) and Genova Yellowfin Tuna in Extra Virgin Olive Oil with Sea Salt 5.0 oz (UPC 4800013275). These cans bear specific codes and best-if-used-by dates of January 21, 2028, and January 17, 2028, respectively. The affected tuna was sent to Meijer stores in Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, and Wisconsin; Giant Foods in Maryland and Virginia; and Safeway, Albertsons, Vons, and Pavilions in California.
