28 Aug
Summary

- Eating kiwis with skin can improve sleep and gut health
- Skin contains antioxidants that support immunity and liver

According to a recent Instagram post by gastroenterologist Dr. Joseph Salhab, eating kiwis with their skin can provide significant health benefits. As of August 28, 2025, Dr. Salhab, an expert in digestion, liver, pancreas, and nutrition, explained that consuming the small, tangy fruit with its fuzzy skin can boost the intake of essential vitamins like C and E, as well as minerals such as folate, magnesium, and B6. Additionally, the skin adds a substantial increase in fiber.
Beyond the nutritional boost, Dr. Salhab also noted that kiwis are known to offer other health benefits, including improving sleep quality and potentially preventing certain types of cancer. The gastroenterologist recommended eating 1-2 kiwis about 2 hours before bedtime, as the fruit can help with melatonin production and better sleep.
Furthermore, the fiber from the skin of kiwis, when broken down by healthy gut bacteria, can produce short-chain fatty acids that help protect the colon and lower the risk of colorectal cancer. Dr. Salhab also mentioned that kiwis are one of his top choices to treat constipation naturally, being gentle, effective, and great when paired with yogurt.
