Ganjam Administration Prepares for Summer Heatwave Season
18 Feb
Summary
- Administration prioritizes repairing defunct tubewells by February-end.
- Plans include uninterrupted power, water kiosks, and heatstroke wards.
- Awareness campaigns will advise against midday outdoor exposure.

With summer heatwaves on the horizon, the Ganjam administration is actively implementing measures to prevent sunstroke fatalities. Collector V Keerthi Vasan has directed officials to repair non-functional tubewells by the end of February to address potential drinking water shortages. The administration is also preparing to supply water via tankers to scarcity-hit areas.
Further preparedness includes ensuring consistent power supply, establishing extensive water kiosks, and providing drinking water for animals and birds. Dedicated heatstroke wards with emergency treatment facilities will be set up in all healthcare centers. Vulnerable individuals will have access to day shelters, and 'jala chhatras' will be installed at crowded locations like bus stands.
Massive awareness campaigns are planned to advise people to avoid venturing out between noon and 3 pm and to carry water bottles and umbrellas when outdoors. Students will be encouraged to drink water at regular intervals, and efforts will be made to extinguish forest fires promptly. The administration emphasized a zero-casualty approach, urging officials to treat heatwave management with commitment and sensitivity, noting that no sunstroke deaths were reported last year.
