Steroid Creams Fuel Fungal Resistance Crisis
10 Jul
Summary
- Indiscriminate steroid cream use causes growing antifungal resistance.
- Over-the-counter access fuels overuse and treatment challenges.
- Resistant infections now take over three months to resolve.

Skin specialists in Hyderabad have issued a stern warning regarding the escalating problem of antifungal resistance (AFR), directly linked to the widespread misuse of steroid-based creams. While these topical treatments offer quick relief for itching and rashes, they often suppress symptoms without eradicating the underlying fungal infection. This practice allows the infection to spread and develop resistance, making it significantly harder to treat.
Despite steroid-containing creams being reclassified as prescription-only medicines following a public interest litigation, their easy availability over-the-counter continues to exacerbate the issue. Independent clinics in Hyderabad are reportedly treating 40-50 such cases weekly, with government hospitals seeing even higher numbers. Experts note that infections once resolved within a month now require over three months of treatment, sometimes necessitating dual antifungal medications and oral prescriptions.
Self-medication, often driven by advice from friends, relatives, or pharmacists, further compounds the problem. This leads to a false sense of recovery while the fungus persists and develops resistance. The misuse extends to combined topical steroids with antifungals and antibiotics, and even dispensing of oral antifungal drugs by pharmacies, all contributing to the growing threat of AFR. Dermatologists emphasize the need for stricter pharmacy regulations and enhanced public awareness to combat this public health concern.
