17 Oct
Summary
- Over £11,000 raised for Mabel, a seven-year-old with Batten disease.
- Funds will purchase a wheelchair-accessible van for essential transport.
- Friends completed a Tough Mudder event to support the fundraising appeal.
A fundraising effort for seven-year-old Mabel, who is battling a rare and degenerative Batten disease, has surpassed its financial goal. Generous donations from friends, family, and the public have collectively raised more than £11,000.
The significant sum will be used to acquire a wheelchair-accessible van, a critical need for the family. Batten disease, an incurable illness affecting the nervous system, has left Mabel unable to walk or talk, requiring her to use a wheelchair and struggle with basic functions like eating and drinking.
Transporting Mabel to regular enzyme therapy at Royal Manchester Children's Hospital has become increasingly challenging for her parents, Cheryl and Chris. The therapy helps slow the disease's progression. A group of Cheryl's friends recently participated in the Tough Mudder assault course to further support the appeal.
Cheryl shared her profound gratitude for the community's kindness and overwhelming support over the past three years. She acknowledged the emotional difficulty of knowing Mabel's condition will worsen, with fears for her eyesight degeneration next.
