Radioactive Shrimp Alert at Jewel-Osco!
23 Dec
Summary
- Frozen shrimp recalled at Jewel-Osco stores in Illinois.
- Possible cesium-137 contamination found in seafood.
- Consumers advised to discard or return recalled shrimp.

Frozen raw shrimp sold at Jewel-Osco stores in Illinois is subject to a recall over concerns of radioactive contamination. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced that Direct Source Seafood LLC initiated the recall for approximately 83,800 bags of frozen raw shrimp imported from Indonesia.
The affected product, sold under the Waterfront Bistro brand at Jewel-Osco locations on or after June 30, 2025, may have been exposed to cesium-137. This manmade radioisotope can be present in environments with contamination, and prolonged exposure could elevate cancer risks.
No illnesses related to this recall have been reported as of December 23, 2025. The FDA strongly advises consumers not to consume the recalled shrimp and to either dispose of it properly or return it to the store for a full refund. Earlier this year, a similar recall involved Great Value shrimp due to potential cesium-137 contamination.
