Surrey Hospital Raac Crisis: Rebuild by 2030?
9 Apr
Summary
- Frimley Park Hospital to be rebuilt due to Raac in two-thirds of buildings.
- Remediation of existing roofs is planned by 2030.
- A new hospital site is considered essential to fully address the risk.

Frimley Park Hospital in Surrey is slated for a major overhaul due to the presence of reinforced autoclaved aerated concrete (Raac) in about two-thirds of its buildings. This material poses a risk when exposed to moisture, prompting urgent action.
The Frimley Health NHS Foundation Trust has set a target to fully remediate the affected roofs by the end of 2030. However, the trust emphasizes that this is a temporary measure.
Reports indicate that while current safety and maintenance works are effective beyond 2030, a new hospital site remains essential for definitively addressing the underlying risk. Construction for the new facility is anticipated to commence between 2028 and 2029.
Although a location has been identified, potentially at the nearby Pine Ridge Golf Club, formal confirmation is pending due to commercial confidentiality. Health Secretary Wes Streeting has confirmed that the project is fully funded, although concerns have been raised by local authorities regarding building on the golf club site.
