Karen Grant and Rosa Somsky, colleagues at AdventHealth Palm Coast's Freytag Cancer Center, received concurrent breast cancer diagnoses in January. Grant, a social worker, and Somsky, a breast care navigator, have worked together for four years.
Despite their personal health battles, both women continued their roles, supporting other cancer patients. They found solace and understanding in their shared experiences, describing their connection as unique and invaluable.
Grant, 67, was diagnosed after a mammogram recommended further screening. Somsky, 62, faced a recurrence of invasive ductal carcinoma nearly 28 years after her initial diagnosis.
Their continued work has enhanced their empathy and understanding of patients' journeys. Grant noted she strives to be a better social worker, while Somsky feels she can connect with patients on a deeper level.
