Actor Euthanized After Mesh Implant Complications

French actor and director Arnaud Denis, aged 43, passed away by euthanasia on Tuesday in Namur, Belgium. His death followed prolonged and unbearable suffering caused by a polypropylene mesh implant fitted in July 2023 for a right groin hernia. This implant led to severe disability and intense pain, prompting his difficult decision in consultation with three doctors.

Denis, known for his theatrical productions, experienced numerous side effects from the implant, which he had removed in the United States in April 2024. He was diagnosed with myalgic encephalomyelitis within the ASIA syndrome, believed to be linked to persistent inflammation from the implant disrupting his immune system. He described his condition as worse than terminal cancer.

Previously, Denis filed a complaint in January 2026 for 'unintentional injuries' related to the implant, but it was dropped later that year. His lawyer condemned the situation as a 'silent public health scandal,' alleging that thousands of patients are exposed to high-risk implants without adequate information or consent, leading to irreversible complications. The manufacturer acknowledged the potential for chronic pain from such devices.

Arnaud Denis had also established a collective, 'French victims of hernia prostheses,' to gather similar testimonies. His lawyer emphasized that patient information on these devices, intended for healthcare professionals, often does not reach patients, leaving them unaware of potential risks.
