Chennai Opens Doors to Free Disability Services

On Saturday, August 1st, 2026, the Tamil Nadu assembly speaker inaugurated a new center in Chennai dedicated to providing free therapy and rehabilitation services for people with disabilities. Named 'Vizhuthugal,' the center is situated on the first floor of the Greater Chennai Corporation-run Chennai Special School for Muscular Dystrophy in Teynampet.

The facility, established by the department for the welfare of differently abled persons, offers comprehensive care including occupational therapy, speech therapy, psychiatric support, and physiotherapy. It also features special education rooms for cognitive development and communication skills, alongside vocational training facilities, and is made accessible by a newly installed lift.

This initiative addresses the ongoing need for accessible and affordable therapy, particularly for individuals with conditions like muscular dystrophy, where regular physiotherapy is vital for maintaining mobility and quality of life. The department's mobile therapy unit will supplement these efforts by providing weekly home-based rehabilitation services and training for family caregivers.

The speaker highlighted the government's commitment to ensuring education, skill training, employment opportunities, and job security for persons with disabilities, emphasizing their right to a dignified life.
