Vulnerable Britons May Be Overlooking Free Meds
28 Oct
Summary
- Many vulnerable individuals unaware of free prescription eligibility.
- Complex systems prevent eligible people from accessing support.
- Proactive identification needed to ensure timely aid.

Vulnerable individuals are at risk of missing out on free NHS prescriptions because the system for accessing them is too complex, according to Helen Lord, CEO of the Vulnerability Registration Service. She stated that people facing difficult life circumstances, such as domestic abuse, bereavement, or sudden financial hardship, often lack the capacity to navigate intricate exemption procedures.
Lord emphasized that the onus should shift from individuals seeking help to a proactive system that identifies those with vulnerabilities. This approach would ensure they receive necessary information and support without delay. The current system requires people to actively understand and apply for various exemptions and prepayment certificates.
Eligibility for free prescriptions extends to those on Universal Credit and Pension Credit, individuals aged 60 and over, and people with specific medical conditions requiring a certificate. However, many may not realize their eligibility, especially if their income has recently decreased or if they are older adults with limited information access.
In response, the NHS Business Services Authority (BSA) stated that help is available to inform people about potential free medication. They utilize a Real Time Exemption Checking system in pharmacies and collaborate with Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) databases. The NHS BSA also conducts promotional campaigns with various organizations.
