In a groundbreaking move, NHS England is set to offer free cholesterol blood tests in high street pharmacies. This initiative, starting this autumn, targets individuals aged 40 to 84 who have not undergone a blood test in the last year. The seven-minute finger-prick tests aim to identify those at high risk of heart attack or stroke, acting as a crucial first line of defense against serious cardiovascular diseases.
Pharmacists will conduct the simple tests using a lancet and immediate analysis. Following the test, individuals will receive their results via email and a consultation that includes lifestyle advice and blood pressure checks. Pharmacist prescribers can also recommend treatment, such as statins, if necessary. This program represents the first of its kind globally and is a significant step in bringing healthcare closer to communities.
A pilot program in north London demonstrated the scheme's effectiveness, with nearly one in five participants identified as high risk. This led to timely interventions, including statin prescriptions for at least 88 individuals. The national rollout will initially involve about 100 NHS pharmacies across England, with plans to expand the service to further reduce heart disease and stroke deaths.
