A free mobile dermatology clinic, known as Mole Mobile and operated by Melanoma Canada, will arrive on Prince Edward Island in August. This initiative offers residents the opportunity to be screened for melanoma and other skin cancers, aiming to reach underserved communities. The clinic's goal is to counter the severe shortage of dermatologists in Canada, where only 800 specialists serve 40 million people, with most concentrated in large cities.
Last year, the Mole Mobile successfully screened nearly 8,300 individuals nationwide, detecting 213 melanomas. This highlights the critical need for accessible early detection. Prince Edward Island currently has only two practicing dermatologists, making access to specialist care challenging for residents. Islanders are encouraged to sign up online in advance for the screening, with location details to be announced on Melanoma Canada's website and social media approximately two weeks prior.
While the screening is a preliminary assessment and not a substitute for a full examination, it utilizes a dermatoscope to identify suspicious lesions. Melanoma Canada can assist patients in finding follow-up care if needed. With melanoma incidence rates tripling in Canada over the past 30 years and three deaths occurring daily, early detection and advanced treatments like immunotherapy are crucial.
