- Hospital aims to support parents during difficult stays.
- This initiative addresses significant weekly financial burdens.

Parents with children in the neonatal unit at James Cook University Hospital are now being offered free meal vouchers. This initiative by the Volunteers' Coffee Lounge seeks to support families during what is often a challenging and anxious time.
The program aims to ensure parents remain nourished while providing bedside care for their sick or premature infants. The hospital recognizes the significant financial strain, with research from 2022 estimating an average additional weekly cost of £405 for families with a baby in neonatal care.
Georgina Oakley, who manages the cafe, shared her personal experience of having a premature baby, emphasizing the importance of support for families. Nurse consultant Lynne Paterson highlighted that these vouchers offer parents a well-deserved break and reduce one less worry during a difficult period.
