Summary
- Lady Hardinge Medical College now offers free epidural analgesia.
- This service, costing thousands privately, is now accessible.
- Lack of anesthetists and patient awareness were key barriers.

Lady Hardinge Medical College (LHMC) in Delhi has begun offering free epidural analgesia, a significant advancement for women in labor. This critical pain relief method, widely adopted globally in the 1990s, has been largely absent from Delhi's government hospitals. The initiative addresses the disparity where this service, costing thousands privately, was inaccessible to many.
Poor availability of anesthesiologists and a high patient load were identified as primary reasons for its previous non-use at LHMC. Doctors are now actively promoting this option, countering the misconception that childbirth must be painful. Since late May 2026, an average of two to three women daily receive epidurals, a procedure typically costing between Rs 5,000 and Rs 20,000 in private settings.
Epidural anesthesia, administered via a spinal catheter, is considered the gold standard for labor pain management. Modern practices confirm it does not increase instrumental or Cesarean delivery rates. Dr. Ranju Singh championed its reintroduction, supported by Dr. Ratna Biswas, making it a reality after hiring experienced staff like Dr. Parul Upreti.
This service requires 24x7 staffing and intensive monitoring by a dedicated anesthesia team. Patient testimonials are encouraging wider adoption, with the same epidural usable for C-sections if necessary. However, concerns about potential increased patient load and the need for continuous monitoring remain, especially as word spreads about this accessible pain relief option.
