The Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Government Stanley Medical College Hospital has successfully performed two complex cardiac surgeries. These life-saving procedures were conducted free of charge for the patients under the Chief Minister's Comprehensive Health Insurance Scheme.
A 61-year-old woman from Vyasarpadi underwent open heart surgery to remove a rare left atrial myxoma, a heart tumor measuring 4.5 × 2.5 cm. She had been experiencing longstanding breathing difficulties.
Additionally, a 59-year-old laborer from Villupuram received a mitral valve replacement. This surgery addressed severe damage to his heart valve caused by infective endocarditis, a heart valve infection.
Both patients have since recovered well and are reported to be in stable condition. The total cost for these advanced cardiac treatments would have been approximately ₹18 lakh if undertaken in private healthcare facilities. The hospital's leadership commended the surgical and anesthesia teams for their expertise in delivering advanced cardiac care without financial burden to the public.
