- Cochlear implants bypass damaged ears, enabling speech development.

Christian Medical College (CMC), Vellore, in collaboration with LIC Golden Jubilee Foundation, has launched a program to provide free cochlear implant surgeries for children suffering from hearing loss. This initiative aims to offer a transformative solution for profound deafness.
The Department of Otolaryngology at CMC has already successfully performed these surgeries on 17 children. LIC's financial support covers the entire cost, including the implant, surgical procedure, and necessary post-operative therapy. This allows children who are born deaf to develop speech and integrate into mainstream society.
A cochlear implant functions by bypassing the damaged portions of the inner ear, thereby providing the sense of sound. Intensive therapy follows the implantation, aiding children in developing speech. This intervention is crucial for children with profound deafness, as hearing aids are often insufficient for their needs.
