Summary
- Free breast cancer screening available until October 31st.
- Women aged 40 and above urged for annual check-ups.
- Early detection ensures a 100% cure rate for breast cancer.

In observance of Pink October, Virudhunagar Government Medical College Hospital commenced free breast cancer screenings for women on Monday. This initiative, available until October 31st, is located in the outpatient ward on the second floor.
The screening was inaugurated by Hospital Dean R. Amutharani. Dr. M. Lakshminarayanan, Head of Surgery, highlighted that breast cancer is the second most common cancer affecting women globally. He stressed that early detection is key to achieving a 100% cure rate.
Dr. Lakshminarayanan advised that all women aged 40 and above should undergo annual screenings. He noted that spinsters and childless women in this age group carry a higher risk due to hormonal and genetic factors. The camp welcomes women without requiring identity or health insurance cards.
Ultrasound scanning and mammograms will be conducted on-site by women surgeons between 7:30 a.m. and 12 noon. Dr. Lakshminarayanan also mentioned that prolonged breastfeeding can reduce risk, and younger women with lumps, even painless ones, should not ignore them.
