California Schools Get Free Inhalers for Asthma Emergencies
22 Aug
Summary
- California schools will receive free albuterol inhalers and spacers.
- The initiative aims to help students with asthma during emergencies.
- The program is expected to reach approximately 10,000 California schools.

California will now provide free emergency albuterol inhalers and spacers to all public and charter schools across the state. Governor Gavin Newsom announced the School Albuterol Access Initiative, implemented via the state's CalRx program. This initiative will supply schools with an annual emergency stock of albuterol inhalers and disposable spacers at no cost for three years, beginning next week.
The program targets approximately 10,000 California schools, aiming to address the needs of the estimated 1 million children in the state who have asthma. Asthma is a significant cause of school absenteeism, with many students missing school due to the condition. Albuterol, a rescue inhaler, can help prevent emergencies and hospital visits.
While public and charter schools receive the supplies for free, private schools can purchase them at a significantly reduced price. Health organizations, including the American Lung Association and the American Academy of Pediatrics California, have lauded the initiative for enhancing student safety and reducing health disparities. Training on asthma recognition and albuterol use will also be provided.
Schools can secure these supplies through an albuterol standing order, allowing them to obtain the medication without individual prescriptions. An online application process is available through the California Department of Public Health for eligible institutions.
