Former MP Katie Allen Dies at 59 After Cancer Battle

Former federal Liberal MP Katie Allen, who represented the Victorian seat of Higgins, has passed away at the age of 59. Her family confirmed her death on Tuesday, remembering her as a devoted mother, doctor, professor, MP, and friend. Allen dedicated her life to caring for others, both in her medical career and public service.

Before entering politics, Allen was a distinguished paediatric allergist and gastroenterologist at the Royal Melbourne Hospital. This year, she disclosed her diagnosis with cholangiocarcinoma, an aggressive cancer affecting the bile ducts, which she was diagnosed with in November 2023. Despite her illness, she ran unsuccessfully for the seat of Chisholm in the recent federal election.

Allen chose to keep her diagnosis private to avoid the perception of seeking sympathy votes. Colleagues remembered her for her vibrant spirit, deep thoughtfulness, and joy for life. Australia has lost a valued public servant and compassionate individual, whose contributions will be deeply missed.
