Summary
- Flavanols, not just quantity, boost heart health.
- Plums and cranberries are top flavanol-rich choices.
- Less than a quarter of adults meet flavanol targets.

A groundbreaking international study has revealed that not all fruits and vegetables offer equal protection for heart health. The research, spanning over 30,000 individuals in the US and UK, indicates that a critical plant compound, flavanols, plays a significant role in maintaining healthy blood vessels and reducing inflammation. Many individuals who adhere to the 'five-a-day' recommendation still fall short of the 500 milligrams of flavanols daily linked to substantial heart benefits.
Flavanols, found in foods such as berries, apples, tea, and beans, are essential for vascular function. The study found that less than a quarter of those eating five servings daily achieved the recommended flavanol intake. Foods like plums and cranberries were identified as particularly potent sources, with plums providing nearly 450 mg per 500-gram serving and cranberries offering around 300 mg per 250 grams. Blackberries, green tea, and broad beans also contribute significantly to flavanol consumption.
While previously known for other health benefits, these flavanol-rich foods are now highlighted for their cardiovascular advantages. Experts emphasize that a diverse diet remains important, but a strategic selection of fruits and vegetables can transform the standard 'five-a-day' into a powerful shield against heart disease. Incorporating plums, blackberries, broad beans, and green tea into daily meals offers a simple yet effective way to boost flavanol intake and support long-term heart health.
