First Renal Denervation in India for Uncontrolled BP
29 Jan
Summary
- First renal denervation procedure performed successfully in India.
- Procedure targets overactive nerves around renal arteries for BP control.
- Promising option for patients unresponsive to multiple medications.

A significant advancement in cardiology was marked with the first Renal Denervation (RDN) procedure conducted in India. Performed by Dr. Saurabh Mehrotra at PGIMER, the procedure treated a 48-year-old patient suffering from long-standing, uncontrolled hypertension. Despite adhering to multiple antihypertensive medications, the patient's blood pressure remained dangerously high. Optimal medical therapy over two weeks did not yield adequate results, prompting the decision for this innovative treatment.
Renal denervation, also known as the Symplicity™ procedure, is a minimally invasive technique that utilizes controlled radiofrequency energy to target and deactivate overactive nerves surrounding the renal arteries. These nerves are implicated in raising blood pressure. The procedure, which requires no permanent implants, was completed without any complications. The patient is now clinically stable, showing improved blood pressure control under ongoing medical supervision. Doctors believe this offers a promising alternative for patients, especially younger ones, who do not respond well to conventional medical treatments.
