The Oxford Vaccine Group administered the experimental shot, ChAdOx1 BDBV, on Friday. This vaccine leverages the same technology as the Oxford AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine, enabling its rapid progression from concept to clinic in just eight weeks. Significant manufacturing capabilities, including 620,000 stockpiled doses from the Serum Institute of India, support this effort.
Scientists are closely monitoring participants as they aim to recruit and vaccinate more volunteers. The urgency stems from the rapid spread of the virus and the challenging conditions in Congo, which hinder containment efforts. This marks Congo's 17th Ebola outbreak since 1976.
