Nine firefighter recruits in Cambridgeshire have successfully completed an arduous 18-mile hike to raise crucial funds for a colleague. The recruits trekked along the Ouse Valley Way, carrying a life-size dummy weighing 80kg in a stretcher, demonstrating their commitment and resilience.
The challenging route, from Huntingdon to St Neots fire stations, tested the recruits with difficult terrain including bushes and brambles. Despite the difficulties, they completed the walk within a substantial timeframe, showcasing their determination.
All funds raised are dedicated to supporting Watch Commander Paul Whitaker, who was diagnosed with a grade 3 astrocytoma in 2024. The money will contribute towards a £140,000 ADVC treatment, a personalized vaccine, hoped to prolong his life and allow him more time with his family. This treatment is not available on the NHS.
The recruits, having completed their initial training, will be stationed across various Cambridgeshire fire stations. The Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service expressed hope that these donations would significantly boost the funds needed for Paul's treatment.
