Cardiac Surgeon Warns: Loud Festivals Harm Health
9 Sep
Summary
- Loud festival noise acts as a physiological stressor.
- Noise can trigger sympathetic nervous system and stress hormones.
- Sleep disruption from noise increases blood pressure and cardiac workload.

Loud noises from amplified music and fireworks during festivals can act as a significant physiological stressor, according to Pune-based cardiac surgeon Dr. Vijay Natarajan. These intense sounds can activate the sympathetic nervous system, leading to a temporary increase in blood pressure, heart rate, and cardiac workload.
Sleep disruption caused by unpredictable and prolonged noise further exacerbates these issues, increasing sympathetic activity and blood pressure. For individuals with cardiovascular conditions such as hypertension, coronary artery disease, or heart failure, these noise-induced stresses could potentially trigger acute cardiac events.
Older adults and those with existing heart disease are particularly vulnerable, but the risks extend to anyone whose sleep is easily disturbed. Doctors advise celebrating responsibly by limiting exposure to extremely loud sounds, maintaining quiet periods, especially at night, and keeping loudspeakers away from residential areas.
