FDA OKs Fruit Vapes for Adults, Sparking Debate
6 May
Summary
- FDA authorized fruit-flavored e-cigarettes for adult smokers.
- This policy shift occurs as teen vaping rates hit a 10-year low.
- Glas Inc. e-cigarettes will be available in mango and blueberry.

In a notable policy reversal, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has authorized fruit-flavored electronic cigarettes for adult smokers. This marks the first time such flavors have received federal permission, previously limited to tobacco and menthol options. The decision follows appeals from the vaping industry and comes as U.S. teen vaping rates have decreased to their lowest in ten years.
Glas Inc., a Los Angeles-based company, received authorization for its mango, blueberry, and menthol-flavored e-cigarettes. The FDA stressed these products are strictly intended for adults aiming to quit or reduce cigarette consumption. The agency cited Glas Inc.'s digital age-verification system, requiring government ID via cellphone and Bluetooth connection to the user's phone, as a measure to prevent underage access.
Health advocacy groups and parent organizations have voiced concerns, anticipating opposition to the new flavor authorizations. They argue flavors are a primary driver of underage vaping. However, the FDA stated it will closely monitor marketing and usage, prepared to act if compliance falters or if youth use increases significantly, potentially withdrawing authorization if benefits no longer outweigh risks.
This action is seen as a key test case for flavored e-cigarettes aimed at adults. While former President Trump had previously supported vaping, his administration also implemented initial flavor restrictions and raised the tobacco purchasing age to 21. Under the Biden administration, the FDA had denied millions of applications for candy and fruit-flavored products, contributing to a decline in teen usage. The Vapor Technology Association has recently engaged with administration officials regarding flavor policies.
