FDA Approves First Fruit Flavored E-Cigs for Adults
6 May
Summary
- FDA authorized fruit-flavored e-cigarettes for adult smokers.
- This marks a significant policy shift by the federal agency.
- The company uses digital age-verification for underage prevention.

In a significant policy shift, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced on Tuesday its authorization of the first fruit-flavored electronic cigarettes explicitly intended for adult smokers. This decision follows extensive lobbying from the vaping industry. Previously, the FDA had only permitted tobacco and menthol-flavored vaping products.
The newly authorized e-cigarettes are available in mango, blueberry, and two menthol varieties. The FDA highlighted the manufacturer's digital age-verification system as a key measure against underage access. This system requires users to verify their age with a government ID via cellphone and connects the device via Bluetooth to the verified user's phone.
Health organizations and parent groups are expected to oppose this move, citing concerns about flavors driving underage vaping. However, the FDA noted that teen vaping rates have reached a 10-year low. The agency reiterated that these products are intended solely for adults aiming to quit or reduce cigarette consumption.
