The U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced on Wednesday its approval of the first freeze-dried plasma product for use nationwide. This groundbreaking product, developed by Vascular Solutions, a subsidiary of Teleflex, is named Ezplaz Freeze Dried Plasma. It is intended for adult patients who need plasma transfusions and for whom conventional plasma products are not accessible.
The approval arrives at a critical juncture, as the American Red Cross faces a severe national blood supply crisis, characterized by donations at a four-year summer low. This shortage has impacted the availability of essential blood types and led to limitations on shipments to hospitals.
Ezplaz presents a significant advantage over traditional plasma. It can be stored at room temperature and reconstituted rapidly, eliminating the need for frozen storage and thawing. Packaged in a durable plastic bag, it is easier to transport and less prone to breakage.
The FDA highlighted the product's potential to enhance plasma availability for individuals experiencing life-threatening bleeding, particularly in combat zones, during disaster response efforts, and in rural communities with limited hospital resources. Ezplaz is derived from a single unit of fresh frozen plasma and is available in Group AB and Group A low-titer anti-B blood types for immediate emergency use before a patient's blood type is confirmed.
