Expert nutritionist Sharan Verma, who retrained after her father's death from the disease, emphasizes that early detection and lifestyle changes are crucial. While there are no widely available drugs to reverse it, Verma shares success stories of patients reversing early stages within 90 days and improving advanced cases in 18 months.
Key dietary recommendations include enjoying coffee daily, as studies show a reduced risk of developing and dying from fatty liver disease. Incorporating berries, rich in antioxidants and polyphenols, may also help reduce inflammation and fat buildup. Cutting back on sugar is vital, as excess sugar can be converted to fat in the liver, contributing to the condition.
The Mediterranean diet, rich in vegetables, fruits, nuts, whole grains, fish, and olive oil, is presented as an effective pattern. This approach not only supports gradual weight loss but also improves insulin sensitivity, aiding blood sugar control and reducing liver fat. Simple swaps like choosing whole grains over refined ones and including fish twice weekly are encouraged.
