Father Dies After 15-Hour A&E Wait Before Christmas
8 Jan
Summary
- A young father died waiting 15 hours for medical attention.
- His spleen ruptured while waiting on a trolley in A&E.
- His family believes the long wait contributed to his death.

Dylan Jones, a 28-year-old father of three, passed away on December 20, ten days after a critical incident on December 10. His family alleges that a prolonged 15-hour wait for medical attention at Edinburgh Royal Infirmary contributed significantly to his death. The situation began when Jones experienced severe pain at work and then faced an additional two-hour wait for an ambulance.
Upon arrival at the A&E department, Jones remained on a trolley for 13 hours. During this extended wait, his spleen ruptured, necessitating an emergency surgery. His family believes that had he received timely medical intervention, his spleen would not have ruptured, and he might have survived his underlying liver condition and Jeune Syndrome.
Medical officials from NHS Lothian apologized for the wait time and extended condolences, stating Jones died after ten days in intensive care due to a long-standing illness. The Scottish Ambulance Service also expressed sympathy and encouraged the family to discuss their experience. A GoFundMe has been established to support Jones' children and cover funeral expenses.
