In a deeply distressing incident in Jharkhand's West Singhbhum district, a father was compelled to carry his newborn's body home in a cardboard box from a government hospital. This event has triggered an official inquiry into the hospital's conduct and the alleged lack of an ambulance service.
The father, Ramakrishna Hembrom, took an e-rickshaw to transport the infant's body to his village, Bangrasai, after the newborn died shortly after birth on March 7. He stated that hospital authorities did not inform them of any available ambulance or mortuary vehicle facilities following the tragedy.
Hospital authorities, however, claim the family did not make any request for transport. Dr. Anshuman Sharma, the in-charge medical officer, indicated that if a request had been made, arrangements could have been provided. He noted that the mother remained hospitalized due to her medical condition, while the family was advised to proceed with the funeral rites.
An internal inquiry has commenced at the Chakradharpur Sub-divisional Hospital to thoroughly investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident. The Additional Chief Secretary (Health) has assured that appropriate action will be taken against anyone found responsible.
