At the Kisan Mela 2025 in Moshi, a 'Cultivating the Mind' initiative offers a crucial space for farmers to address their mental and emotional wellbeing. This dedicated pavilion, a collaboration with the Institute for Psychological Health (IPH), provides pamphlets and counseling to farmers grappling with stress, anxiety, and financial hardships stemming from issues like crop failure and unpredictable weather. The program has seen significant engagement, with over a thousand farmers engaging with materials daily and a notable number seeking one-on-one sessions.
The initiative addresses often-overlooked mental health concerns in rural India. Counsellors report common issues such as uncertainty, financial stress, addiction, anger, and anxiety, with men comprising nearly 90% of those seeking help. Stories emerge of farmers facing sleepless nights due to crop losses and mounting debts. The program emphasizes that seeking help is a sign of courage, offering guided discussions and relaxation techniques to manage overwhelming emotions and triggers.
Recognizing the silent suffering, particularly among male farmers, the pavilion offers a safe haven for reflection and support. Sessions with psychologists and volunteers help farmers identify emotional patterns and develop coping mechanisms. The core message, 'We can't change our circumstances, but can change our state of mind,' empowers individuals to confront challenges. The initiative also acknowledges the resilience of women farmers, who often manage burdens with determination, while providing critical support to all visitors.
