Summary
- Indigenous leaders participated in a sacred fire ceremony.
- A dedicated Indigenous healing space is planned.
- The hospital project will be built in three phases.
Indigenous leaders, hospital officials, and community partners gathered for a sacred fire ceremony at the upcoming Fancsy Family Hospital site. This significant Indigenous tradition, led by Elder Mike Hopkins and Helper Leon Shipman, honored the land and sought guidance for the new facility, which is expected to serve the region for many years.
The ceremony was held ahead of the project's first phase groundbreaking, anticipated later this summer. Participants engaged in prayer, reflection, and healing around a sacred fire, acknowledging Indigenous traditions. Hospital president and CEO Kristin Kennedy highlighted the organization's commitment to reconciliation and incorporating Indigenous perspectives into the hospital's redevelopment.
Plans for the new Fancsy Family Hospital feature a dedicated Indigenous healing space near the main entrance, complete with an outdoor healing garden and storage for traditional medicines. This space is designed to host traditional ceremonies, including smudging, and family meetings. The hospital project is proceeding in three phases due to its scale and complexity.
Phase 1 involves an education and administrative center and a parking garage. Phase 2, the Diagnostic and Treatment Block, will house the main entrance, emergency department, cancer center, and other critical services. The final phase will be a nine-storey inpatient tower. The site was officially named Fancsy Family Hospital in 2025 following a substantial $40 million donation.
