24 Jun
Summary
- Indigenous leaders participated in a sacred fire ceremony for the new hospital.
- The hospital will feature a dedicated Indigenous healing space and garden.
- The project is named Fancsy Family Hospital after a substantial donation.

A sacred fire ceremony, a significant Indigenous tradition, was held Tuesday at the future site of the Fancsy Family Hospital. Led by Traditional Knowledge Keeper Elder Mike Hopkins and Traditional Helper Leon Shipman, the event honored the land and its original stewards ahead of the project's first phase groundbreaking. Participants sought guidance and protection for the hospital that will serve the region.
Windsor Regional Hospital (WRH) president and CEO Kristin Kennedy stated the ceremony reflects the organization's commitment to reconciliation and incorporating Indigenous perspectives. The new hospital will include a dedicated Indigenous healing space near the entrance, complete with an outdoor healing garden and facilities for traditional ceremonies like smudging.
The massive hospital project, named Fancsy Family Hospital after a $40 million donation, is being built in three phases. Phase 1 includes an education center and parking garage, while subsequent phases will house the Diagnostic and Treatment Block and an inpatient tower. This redevelopment aims to modernize healthcare delivery across Windsor-Essex.
