Exercise Timing Boosts Heart Health: Study
16 Apr
Summary
- Exercising during natural alertness improves blood pressure.
- Chronotype-aligned workouts yield better health results.
- Individualized exercise timing could improve heart health.

Aligning exercise with an individual's natural alertness patterns, known as chronotype, can lead to enhanced cardiometabolic health benefits. A recent study in Lahore, Pakistan, involving sedentary adults aged 40-60 with cardiovascular risk factors, explored this connection.
Participants were assigned to exercise either in line with their morning or evening chronotype or at opposite times for 12 weeks. The findings indicated that exercising during preferred times resulted in greater reductions in blood pressure and "bad" cholesterol levels.
Specifically, the chronotype-aligned group experienced a nearly 11 mmHg systolic blood pressure drop, compared to 5.5 mmHg in the misaligned group. This timing approach emerged as a significant predictor for changes in systolic blood pressure, suggesting its importance for cardiovascular health management.
While the study showed promising results, researchers noted limitations such as a small sample size and a relatively short intervention period. The generalizability of findings to broader populations and long-term effects remain areas for further investigation.
