EU Vaping Alarm: Youth Addiction Soars
28 Apr
Summary
- Rising youth e-cigarette use fuels addiction, not cessation.
- Nicotine harms adolescent brain development and mental health.
- India faces promotion of new nicotine products despite bans.

Mothers Against Vaping (MAV) has welcomed the European Commission's acknowledgment of emerging nicotine devices as significant public health concerns. The organization, comprising women advocating against the promotion of vapes and e-cigarettes to Indian youth, stated that these products are increasingly used by younger individuals. Contrary to marketing claims, these devices often act as a gateway to nicotine addiction, rather than facilitating smoking cessation, and expose adolescents to serious long-term health risks.
The European Commission's evaluation of its tobacco control framework noted a decline in smoking but highlighted growing challenges from novel tobacco and nicotine products, particularly among young people. Experts indicate that nicotine exposure during critical adolescent brain development can impair attention, memory, and emotional regulation, while increasing susceptibility to anxiety and mood disorders. Respiratory irritation and cardiovascular strain are also linked to their use.
Evidence suggests that e-cigarette use increases the likelihood of starting traditional cigarette smoking, with some reports indicating a threefold increase. The World Health Organization has stated that e-cigarettes are not proven effective for smoking cessation, and a 2023 Eurobarometer survey revealed a majority of respondents do not believe they help smokers quit. In India, despite existing bans, new nicotine products are being promoted through unauthorized online sales and social media, aiming to create a new generation of users.
MAV calls for stronger enforcement and tighter surveillance to prevent the influx of illegal products threatening India's youth. Educationists are troubled by the appeal of these devices to youth curiosity and peer influence. They stress the importance of awareness and resilience-building in educational institutions and families, advocating for policies to remain effective against new nicotine products like nicotine pouches and for regular policy reviews.
